The G R Bar Ranch borders both the Grand Mesa National (Unit 521) and Gunnison National Forest (Unit 52) Forests to the north, and joining Bureau of Land Management lands to the south. We have four permanent hunting cabins, Red Springs, Kokopelli, Many Penny and Arrowhead, furnished with kitchen utensils, dishes, silverware, etc. Due to the elevation lighting if furnished by propane.

In addition to the four cabins mentioned above we also have Whiskey Jug cabin, which is not leased to hunters but is available as an overnighter for our hunters on a rotation basis if desired. Whiskey Jug is located in gamble oak at an elevation of 8,000 feet, with rugged canyons and surrounded by Bureau of Land Management land. It will accommodate five hunters, has a woodburning heating stove and four burner propane gas stove for cooking. Water is furnished via coolers and refrigeration by ice chest. The Lodge, ranch headquarters where the owners stay, is located at 9,100 feet, complete in all respects with separate bedrooms for husband and wife hunting teams.

Our cabins collectively will accommodate more hunters than we choose to book. We limit the number of rifle hunters to 16 for any one season. Archery and black powder season is limited to 12, which makes for a better hunt for all concerned.

Our hunting success ratio is considerably better than most other areas in Colorado. The Grand Mesa has the second highest concentration of game in the State.

Hunter Education proof required to apply for or purchase any big game license if born on or after January 1, 1949. Colorado will honor other States certificates.

Application deadline for licenses available by draw is midnight the first Tuesday of April.

We do not permit the use of ATVs during any of our hunts which, makes for a better hunt since elk in particular are pushed out of an area by the two cycle engine noise. You do need a four wheel drive vehicle. The road to our cabins (excepting Whiskey Jug) and the fishing lakes are graveled and are all accessible by four wheel drive.

We have a “get together” for rifle hunters, a steak fry and refreshments the night before the start of the hunt, at the Lodge, so that our hunters meet each other and know who will be in the field. All of our land is posted. We allow no trespassers.

Our hunters are welcome to take advantage of our eight fishing lakes, which are usually open going into the third season (depending on the weather). No fishing license required and no charge for the fish you catch.

There is nothing like being in good hunting territory, with a limited number of hunters, and nothing like having a roof over your head, just like home, when the weather is adverse.
