Vacations
The G R Bar Ranch is nestled in the picturesque Colorado Rockies at an elevation of 7,000 up to 10,000 feet, offers an unequaled opportunity to relax and enjoy time away from the pressure and stress of the workaday world. From Memorial Day weekend through the month of September we make available four ranch houses on a weekly basis, Saturday to Saturday. Frankly we know of nothing like what we offer anywhere. It is much like having your own mountain cabin without investment, maintenance or expense of ownership. Our cabins are from one-half to one and one-half miles apart from each other to offer privacy and seclusion with all the amenities of home. All cabins are complete with utensils, cookware, dishes, etc., and have a propane barbecue. Linens, including towels, and bedding are furnished. At this high elevation lighting is provided by propane.
ActivitiesHorseback riding: Each cabin has it's own corral and tack room with a horse and all tack furnished in the weekly rental for each adult guest. Additional horses may be rented on a daily basis. We make every effort to match the skill of the rider to the horse, having horses suitable for beginners as well as experienced riders. There is unlimited area to ride. Fishing: We have eight private lakes, one within walking distance of each cabin, which are stocked with several species of trout, trout up to six pounds. No fishing license is required and there is no charge for the fish you catch. Several lakes have docks, rowboats or paddleboats. Jeep rides: You may want to take a four-wheel drive to the end of the road and explore the wilderness beyond. Hiking: In addition to the ranch itself, we border both the Gunnison and Grand Mesa National Forests, which offer an area for hiking and horseback riding. Photography: Panoramic landscapes, color splashed sunsets, wild flowers, animals, birds and of course you with the big fish you caught. Boating: Boats are provided on Spring Lake, Eagle Lake, Rainbow Lake, Ute Lake and Beaver Lake.
The tiny humming birds dart around the flowers and feeders and often buzz anyone wearing red. Many species of songbirds abound. It is not uncommon to encounter the grouse, especially in the evening, perhaps a hen with her clutch. The stately hawk rides the thermals in search of an unwary rodent. Majestic bald or golden eagles may be seen spiraling upward into the azure sky. More than 30 species of birds have been identified on the ranch.
As many as 60 different varieties of wildflowers spread their color and beauty throughout the forest and parks from the glacier lily blooming among the last remnants of spring snow to the midsummer columbine (the Colorado State flower), to meadows frosted with lavender and white fleabane in the fall. A myriad of flowers. You may want to use your cabin as a base and visit points of interest; an hours drive to Crested Butte, an old mining town and now ski area; 2 hours to Aspen ski resort; 1 hour to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (the deepest gorge in the U.S.). Perhaps a day trip to Ouray in Colorado's highest mountain range (Colorado's “Little Switzerland”); perhaps a 1½ hour drive to Glenwood Springs to the world's largest natural hot springs swimming pool, visit the Anasazi ruins at Mesa Verde or take a 1½ hour drive to explore the Colorado National Monument. There are also many galleries, artisans, glass blowers, wineries and other places of interest within a short distance of the ranch. You can drive to all of our cabins and fishing lakes with a two wheel drive vehicle but to take full advantage of the ranch and adjoining national forests a four wheel drive is preferable. If you are flying Grand Junction is the nearest airport but we would suggest you check the possibility of flying into Denver and renting a four wheel drive vehicle. You would have an absolutely gorgeous five hour drive to the ranch, through Eisenhower Tunnel, over Vail Pass, through Vail and along the beautiful Crystal River, over McClure Pass; all of which is an awe-inspiring drive. This is the type of setting and vacation people dream about but seldom experience. There are a number of families who spend a week or two with us each summer in what they consider to be their own private mountain retreat. As a result we book up quite rapidly and rather early reservations are necessary less we be booked. |
